A close up look at nets used in an innovative new process created by Italian-based company Aquafil to make Outerknown’s new collection of sustainable products.

This past weekend, Kelly Slater’s new brand Outerknown hosted an intimate beach-house gathering at famed architect Harry Gesner’s Sand Castle house right off Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Guests at the soiree included Cindy Crawford, Chris Hemsworth and the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Anthony Kiedis. Other mentions of A-list actors and actresses included Julia Roberts, Jason Statham, and Johnny Knoxville.
Outerknown is working with Italian based group Aquafil, which offers an incentive for fishermen to turn in and properly dispose of their worn nets, keeping them out of the sea. Using a regeneration process, the nets are broken down, combined with other types of pre- and post-consumer waste and transformed into ECONYL, an innovative new nylon yarn. Aquafil describes their process as regeneration as opposed to recycling because it’s a closed-loop system, there’s an infinite number of times the nylon can be broken down and re-born into new yarn without any loss of quality.
