Pre-consumer (also called post-industrial) material is waste diverted from the manufacturing process before the product is completed.

Also known as post-industrial material, it excludes scraps reused within the same process that generated them. Because it originates from industrial activity, pre-consumer material carries an environmental burden.

 

e.g. Textile offcuts collected during garment manufacturing are considered pre-consumer material.
